While seemingly everyone else in the entire world is balls-deep in Mass Effect 2, my spare time has recently been occupied by the Wii’s Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep. Its modest Metacritic rating of 74 suggests people still aren’t quite getting it, which is a shame – it’s absolutely not a game for action junkies, but I’m not convinced it’s been particularly well-served by some of the appraisals it’s received to date.
For what it is – a scuba diving adventure with one foot in reality and the other firmly in the realms of the fantastical – it’s a thoroughly charming and relaxing game, ideal for parents with curious kids, and genuinely quite educational as well as entertaining. It’s a game whose glacial pacing seems to make it a little too easy for reviewers to dismiss as ‘boring’, but I’ve spent close to thirty hours happily seeking out rare fish to photograph, or valuable treasure to salvage.
I won’t say any more, because I’ve got a review to write and will elucidate further therein. But if you’re a Wii owner with thirty pounds burning a hole in your pocket, and you fancy something a little different, then you’ve got little to lose by taking the plunge.
In the meantime, have a few more snaps I took when deep sea diving this morning.
